The American Trench Coat

We’re all inspired by something.

We introduced the original American Trench Coat in 2010. It was a true project, proving that exceptional outerwear can still be made in America. The goal was to preserve the skill, experience, and craftsmanship behind one of menswear’s most enduring garments. Over 15 years later, our mission remains the same.

The American Trench Coat is cut from 100% cotton Ventile®, an extraordinary weatherproof cotton developed for the British military and woven entirely from natural fibers. Rather than relying on synthetics, Ventile® creates its weather resistance through a dense weave that will not degrade over time. When fabric gets wet, the cotton fibers naturally expand, blocking out the elements while remaining breathable.

Like the best garments, it improves with time. The fabric softens, molds to its owner, and develops character without a functional loss. Function makes up the DNA of this coat. It’s easy to say it can be the only jacket in a wardrobe. Elegance guaranteed.

Our namesake garment was proudly produced in Boston at a modern manufacturing facility known for its sophisticated premium outerwear.

The American Trench Coat is known for being:
- Single breasted with genuine horn buttons, draping for a memorable A-line shape
- Complete with a refined collar and notch lapels, plus a detachable hood for when the weather turns
- Aided by raglan sleeves for mobility in the shoulders with a back vent for ventilation
- Complete with roomy slash pockets, adjustable cuffs, and large interior stow pockets
- Lined with our signature 100% cotton Prince of Wales plaid, woven in North Carolina [Navy] or lined with a 100% cotton Typewriter cloth, woven in Japan [Khaki]

Ventile® cloth, first developed in England in 1943, continues to be the ultimate alternative to synthetic rainwear. Commissioned by Winston Churchill during WWII, Ventile® was created to help RAF Pilots survive the change in temperature during shifting altitudes. It summited Mount Everest in 1953 too, proving to be a versatile and resistant outerwear material. Today, Ventile® is woven in Switzerland and treated with a light coating of DWR for a modern twist and enhanced water resistance.

The interior plaid lining is woven in North Carolina exclusively for American Trench from 100% cotton.
